Next is installing the LCD…

Windows 8 consumer preview (beta) installed.

Now heres the first of a few problems…

The new metro ui in windows 8 needs a 1024×768 display but these netbooks (as most netbooks) only have a 1024×600 display…

Well heres a nice lil registry hack i found on www.lilputing.com and have reposted here…

1. Run Regedit

From the Windows 8 Start Screen, just start typing “regedit” without the quotes.

The Registry editor appear on the left side of the screen. Tap it to launch regedit.

2. Adjust the Display1_DownScalingSupported setting

Hit the Ctrl+F keys on your keyboard to bring up a search box, and search for “Display1_DownScalingSupported” without the quotes.

Once your computer finds that entry, double-click it to bring up a box that should have a 0 in it. Change that number to a 1 and then click OK to close the box.

Now hit F3 to search for any additional instances of the Display1_DownScalingSupported setting and change those form 0 to 1 as well. On my system there were two entries.

Once you’re done, go ahead and exit the regedit program.

3. Reboot your computer

4. Adjust your screen resolution

Once your computer restarts, click the Desktop button from the Start Screen, right-click on the desktop, and select “Screen resolution” from the context menu.

In the Resolution drop-down box you should notice new options including 1152 x 864 and 1024 x 768. Choose one of these new options.

So thats that one solved…

The next snag when hacking these netbooks is there are no physical buttons for wifi/vol/sleep etc and all need the fn key to be pressed, and the fn key is a BIOS key and cannot be emulated in windows.

So Ive basically made it so the fn key key is always pressed (which doesnt cause any errors in windows because it is a bios key and windows doesnt know a key is being pressed)  and am going to mount the F1-12 above to the screen when i make my custom fiberglass  fascia.

So now its just a matter of buying and installing the touchscreen and making the fibreglass fascia  and mounting the cam,mic etc into it then stripping it all down and giving it a cool paint job. more pictures as i progress…

In case you haven’t already heard, congress is currently reviewing new bills that threaten the very fabric of the internet. The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill, and it’s sister bill, Protect IP Act (PIPA), are currently working their way through the United States Congress and the Senate. If these bills pass any copyright holder can simply allege a site infringes on their copyright and the site could be redirected at the DNS level and be cut off from all major ad services and payment processing services – all without any trial or due process of any kind. It’s scary stuff, but we won’t rehash the full issue here.
