We stayed for a few nights at Eggleston abbey.
The abbey is maintained by the english-heritage and is £2 to park all day (via SMS or online) and buy it’s free if you are a heritage member and its free to look around the abbey.
Please note if you don’t like livestock this probably isn’t the spot for you, but Holly (the dog) is enthralled by them!
We slowly walked into Barnard castle as I am recovering from a herniated disc and the sciatica that goes with it is lingering on, so a very slow pace and several sit/lay downs in the sunshine were needed!
We were getting hot on the jaunt up to the castle which is on quite a steep hill, so we stopped at a local pub, just off the main high street called the crobar which has one of the nicest beer gardens I’ve ever been in! I didnt make it into the pub as I needed to sit down (sciatica taking hold) so Sam and ty went and got the drinks while Holly (the dog) and I got comfy, but Sam said inside the pub was lovely too!
The castle ruins charges a fee to look round and is a little bit pricey but is also maintained by english-heritage so if you are member it is free entry there too!
Its less than £10 a month for a family membership (2 adults and upto 12 kids) with free or reduced entry prices to lots of interesting places and events all over the country that will surely add many miles to the van.
We are now waiting for our heritage welcome pack and will definitely be staying at the Abby again soon and will be taking some micro drones to have a fly around a beautiful place with stunning scenery!
We decided to end Saturday night with a BBQ by the river tees for tea, watching the ducks go by and trying to teach Tyler to skim stones on the river with while I can’t actually throw a stone due to extremely limited movement from my back injury.
But we all had a really nice time and will be back again sometime soon!
